Louis L'Amour's whole thesis (I'm just now finishing the last of his novels) is that cowboys and indigenous Americans were just people, with good ones, bad ones and everything in between. Indeed "Th' Ol' West was about survival" is pretty much a perfect summary of L'Amour's work; one of his short story collections is titled "The Strong Shall Live".

Just sayin'.
