Apparently, polar bears have a long history of being used in Santa-based popular culture. They appear in the Rankin/Bass specials, and golden age comics that deal with the holiday season are littered with them.

What makes much less sense is Santa having a pet penguin. Oh, sure, the special explains that the penguin got lost, but the fact remains that penguins are from the southern hemisphere, while Santa lives in the northern hemisphere. The same as polar bears.

Reindeer? They also make perfect sense to be associated with Santa Claus. Although in order to fit the image, all of Santa's reindeer have to be either female or gelded, since males shed their antlers for the winter.
