LSD was supposed to be a medically useful ergot alkaloid derivative. The psychotherapeutic benefits and the psychedelic effects were unexpected. Silly Putty was supposed to be a cheap replacement for rubber for the war effort. It made terrible tires, but a fantastic children's toy. Viagra was supposed to be angina medicine. Instead it became a keyword that insures you get tons of spam daily (uh-oh).

And Chicken Marsala was supposed to be a recreation of Indian food -- but it's actually the British contribution to chemical warfare.
