Somewhere around 21% of Americans own a passport. That number has gone up 6% since the U.S. started requiring a passport to travel to Canada and Mexico.

Just one of the things you might consider when wondering why more Americans don't travel is that Europeans live in countries where anywhere from 10-30 days of paid vacation are mandated by law, and Americans live in a country that legally mandates exactly zero days of paid vacation.
